Today I woke up and for some reason remembered the little container I still have of fresh turmeric (which I bought cause ya know, turmeric is all the rage for those health benefits these days), and decided I would find a good recipe to use it in. I, of course, jumped on Pinterest (wow, I make myself sound so...yeahhh) and searched turmeric. And let me tell you, there are some wild things you can do with turmeric! From turmeric face masks, to turmeric teas, turmeric soups and turmeric smoothies, using turmeric to whiten teeth, and my favorite possibility I saw: turmeric gummies (I wonder how those would taste...). One option among these many different recipes was a "Detoxifying Turmeric Smoothie." I went for that one because really who doesn't want to detoxify their body via a smoothie first thing in the morning. Not to mention I pretty much had all the ingredients on hand, so I could make it without having to untangle my hair and put a bra on first. Always a big plus. The ingredients are pretty simple: Coconut milk (I used almond milk, cause coconut milk...blek!), Dates, Banana, Cinnamon powder, Fresh Turmeric, Ginger, Yogurt, Honey, and Ice. The recipe I used can be found here http://theindianspot.com/how-to-make-detoxifying-turmeric-smoothie-recipe/ The recipe calls for you to peel and grate the ginger and turmeric, which is how I found out that turmeric with all it's great medicinal properties (which I'll highlight for you later), also indeed has some fantastic staining properties as well. My fingers for the rest of the day shall be a lovely orange-yellow hue...thank you turmeric and all you have done for me so far. Alas, it is not so bad and perhaps with some lemon juice would be easy to get off (if it works for fake tans it should work for this too, right?). Despite the fact that my fingers are now stained, the smoothie was actually quite delicious! I swapped out a few minor details of the ingredients (coconut milk for almond milk, medjool dates instead of others, and unsweetened yogurt), but it turned out to be very good. It is very sweet on it's own, so maybe next time I would do half the dates, and less honey! Here is how my smoothie looked (before I devoured it): As you can see it is pretty thick, and not all of the dates blended super well (I had to chew through some dates left at the bottom of the cup), but my blender is kind of crappy anyways, and maybe you'll have better luck than I did. Overall it was sweet, delicious, and packed full of good-for-you foods! Not to mention it yields a good amount, so it is a good breakfast option all on its own!
So now for those Turmeric medicinal benefits they boast about:
Cheers, yours truly stained fingers
